Active Exploitation of OpenSSH RegreSSHion v2 Race Condition Spreads Across Linux Bastion Hosts
By Dmitri Kozlov (Senior Exploit Analyst, BlueCiphr Labs)
60-SECOND EXECUTIVE TL;DR
High-concurrency signal handler race condition yields unauthenticated remote code execution as root on Linux.
- Affects OpenSSH server daemon (sshd) running on default port 22 in standard glibc environments.
- Over 380,000 corporate bastions and jump servers actively scanned by automated botnet clusters.
- Proof-of-Concept exploit script published openly; vendors rolling out emergency glibc and OpenSSH binaries.
Immediate Mitigation: Set LoginGraceTime 0 in sshd_config as temporary work-around; restrict port 22 to internal VPN ranges.
Threat actors are actively weaponizing CVE-2026-9214, an unauthenticated remote code execution vulnerability in OpenSSH sshd daemon known as RegreSSHion v2.
The flaw exists due to an asynchronous signal safety violation in the timeout handling function `sigalarm_handler()`. By flooding the server with concurrent connections that expire precisely as authentication buffers initialize, the attacker forces heap manipulation to gain arbitrary root control.
### Indicators of Compromise (IoCs)
- **Scanning Botnet IPs**: 185.220.101.45, 91.240.118.172, 194.38.20.9
- **Exploit Fingerprint**: Bursts of 1,000+ rapid SYN packets with SSH-2.0-client identifier `libssh_adv_v2`
- **Remediation**: Update OpenSSH to version 9.8p2+ or disable asynchronous login grace timers immediately.
