Critical OAuth2 Token Replay Flaw in Enterprise Identity Gateways Discovered by BlueCiphr Red Team
By Elena Rostova (Principal Threat Researcher, BlueCiphr Labs)
60-SECOND EXECUTIVE TL;DR
Race condition in distributed Redis token blacklists permitted persistent session replay after user deprovisioning.
- Terminated employees or compromised tokens could maintain valid cloud console access for up to 72 hours.
- Bypassed Okta / Entra ID conditional access policies due to asynchronous cross-region cache replication lag.
- Patch verified by BlueCiphr; organizations advised to force immediate token introspection validation.
Immediate Mitigation: Switch from stateless JWT validation to synchronous backchannel token introspection.
During a scheduled red teaming engagement for a Fortune 100 enterprise, BlueCiphr Offensive Security analysts discovered a severe authorization replay flaw affecting distributed identity federation gateways.
The vulnerability (CVE-2026-5188) allows an attacker holding a signed JWT refresh token to execute high-privilege administrative actions even after the identity provider has issued a global logout event.
### Root Cause Analysis
Because the microservice architecture relied on eventually consistent Redis cache clusters across multiple geographic regions, invalidation events lagged by several seconds to hours, allowing rapid concurrent API replay attacks.
