Adversarial Prompt Steganography: Stealthy Injection Bypasses Enterprise RAG Guardrails via Unicode Vectors
By Dr. Alicia Vance (Lead AI Safety Researcher)
60-SECOND EXECUTIVE TL;DR
Invisible zero-width unicode characters in uploaded corporate PDFs manipulate LLM retrieval ranking.
- Bypasses standard semantic text filters and vector similarity boundary checks completely.
- Enables rogue internal users to exfiltrate executive salary data and unredacted board minutes via AI chat assistants.
- Highlights need for deterministic pre-ingestion text sanitization in all GenAI RAG pipelines.
Immediate Mitigation: Deploy pre-embedding regex stripping for zero-width spaces (U+200B) and homoglyph normalization.
A novel class of prompt injection named **Adversarial Prompt Steganography** has been demonstrated against corporate Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) platforms.
Adversaries embed invisible unicode control characters (such as `U+200B` zero-width spaces and `U+200D` zero-width joiners) inside seemingly benign policy documents. When vector embeddings calculate chunk similarity, the hidden payload re-indexes the document as top priority for confidential executive queries, instructively forcing the model to leak system prompts and private embeddings.
### BlueCiphr AI Defense Blueprint
BlueCiphr's AI Security practice recommends:
1. Implementing canonical unicode normalization (`NFKC`) prior to tokenization.
2. Restricting LLM system output access using strict output token DLP classifiers.
